The Concert Singers of Cary, a 501(c)3, seeks a part-time Artistic Director to continue our mission to enrich the regional Research Triangle communities by performing outstanding choral music from all traditions. For over 30 years, we have been recognized for our unique and varied repertoires, creative collaborations with other performing arts organizations, and community outreach.  

Time Commitment:  Weekly rehearsal and additional time for performances and planning.  Average 10-12 hours per week.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Artistic Director must bring a positive, energetic, and collaborative approach to rehearsals and concerts with an emphasis on growing our audience and community outreach.  The Artistic Director provides the artistic vision of The Concert Singers of Cary and is responsible for the leadership and direction of every aspect of the choral performances. The Artistic Director reports to the board of directors and collaborates with the Executive Director and Membership Administrator.

   Artistic Management

  • Provides overall artistic leadership and direction to the organization 
  • Regularly holds auditions for new choir members and determines methods of evaluation for current choir members
  • Supervises all artistic aspects in the choice of repertoire and selection of venues
  • Provides rehearsal and concert calendars
  • Selects all artistic personnel, including: choir members, soloists, orchestra/contractor, and guest conductors
  • Supervises all rehearsals and concerts for CSC Symphonic Choir (100+ voices) and CSC Chamber Choir (30 voices).  The Chamber Choir requires additional, separate rehearsals outside of the Symphonic Choir rehearsals.
  • Supervises all recording activities
  • Writes program notes for concerts when needed
  • Prepares scores for chorus, orchestra, and soloists
  • Participates with the Executive Director in fee negotiation for artists and other personnel

   Board Relations

  • Presents monthly reports, either written or oral, to the Executive Committee and the full Board of Directors regarding the status of the artistic programs and projects
  • Attends CSC Board meetings, held monthly, as an ex-officio member
  • Participates in fundraising activities when performance forces are needed

   Public Relations

  • Serves as the official spokesperson for the organization
  • Participates in community activities that further the name recognition of the chorus
  • Represents the chorus in all media appearances
  • Collaborates with management in developing marketing campaigns and publicity for the chorus

   Financial Management

  • Develops annually a comprehensive artistic plan that, in collaboration with the Executive Director, provides the basis for the annual budget
  • Follows the approved annual budget for the programs
  • Collaborates in the preparation of grant applications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in music is required. Higher degree preferred.  
  • Demonstrate success in directing a SATB chorus of similar or larger size.  
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in choral and instrumental conducting.  
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to meet schedules, timelines, and budgets.    

TYPICAL SCHEDULE

  • Weekly Symphonic Choir rehearsals on Monday, 7:30-9:30 pm, September to May
  • Fall Concert: Late October to Early November at Cary Arts Center
  • December Holiday Pops: Early December at Cart Arts Center
  • Winter Concert- Late January to Early February, Chamber Choir, Location TBD 
  • Spring Concert- Late April to Mid-May, Location TBD
  • Cary Big Sing- Fall or Spring, Community invited to sing with us at a rehearsal
  • Recent partnerships for performances with SIFAA, Durham Symphony, NC Symphony, and the Town of Cary tree lighting.
