Responsibilities

The Artistic Director is responsible for supporting the artistic vision and providing leadership to achieve HHCS mission and future growth. The Artistic Director reports to and works closely with the Board of Directors.  The Artistic Director will be expected to

  • Plan varied and diverse programs for the season in line with the budget and strategy stipulated by the Board.
  • Create and administer the annual budget for music, soloists, and orchestra players.
  • Assess and rehearse volunteer singers and lead the chorus in public performances. The HHCS year begins on June 1 and concludes on May 31.  Following the start of the year, regular Sunday rehearsals commence in July, leading up to four major concerts scheduled between September and May.  Additional rehearsals take place during concert weeks and on an as-needed basis.
  • Select, train, and rehearse orchestras, guest choruses, and soloists to perform with the HHCS, as appropriate for the repertoire being presented.
  • Serve as a member of the Board of Directors and collaborate closely with the board on governance, fundraising, and marketing.
  • Coordinate with Music Librarians, Operations, Stage Setup Crew, Lighting & Sound technicians and other technical personnel.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and our PR Agency for the development of promotional materials for the entire season, including all concerts and special events.
  • Serve as the Public Relations Ambassador for the HHCS in local and regional affairs.

Skills

  • Proven success in conducting both vocal and instrumental groups (minimum of 5 years of experience).
  • Proven ability to develop and implement annual budgets and goals.
  • Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to engage singers, players, and audiences.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.

 Preferred residence location is the SC/GA Lowcountry.

Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is commensurate with education and performance experience.  This is a non-benefits eligible position. Compensation is determined annually by the Board of Directors.

Reporting Date:

The AD is expected to start in May 2026 in order to prepare for the upcoming season.  Rehearsals begin in July.
