Position Overview

Charleston Southern University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities to begin August 1, 2025. Charleston Southern seeks candidates who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.  The candidate selected for this position will coordinate and conduct choral activities in the Horton School of Music and Performing Arts at Charleston Southern University as well as coordinate and teach coursework within the Bachelor of Arts in Choral Music Education degree program.   


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate for this position must be able to teach Music Education classes, conducting, and direct one or more choral ensembles. Additional skills and experience the candidate may offer in theory, aural skills, diction, studio (voice, piano, instrumental), or other core music courses are also desirable. Expectations of the Director of Choral Activities include sponsoring high school choral events and working with regional high school choirs. Active involvement in ACDA and NAfME is expected. Involvement in student advising, committee service, and professional development are required, as are active recruitment efforts with regional schools and positive relationships and collaborations with area directors.

 

Qualifications

This is a tenure track position. The candidate is required to have earned a master’s degree in music, with a minimum of 18 hours in music education in hand at time of application.  A PhD in Music Education or a DMA in Choral Conducting is preferred. A minimum of three years of successful choral teaching at the secondary level is also a requirement.  The successful applicant will provide evidence of successful recruitment of student musicians, as well as excellence in teaching, performing, and scholarly activity.
