About Berks Youth Chorus

Berks Youth Chorus’ mission is to enrich our community by fostering and promoting choral excellence in young people through music education and quality performances. Serving singers in grades 3 through 12, our ensembles bring together youth from diverse backgrounds to share in the joy of music-making and to enrich our community through song. Position Summary

The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrative officer of Berks Youth Chorus, reporting to the Board of Directors. The ED is responsible for the overall strategic leadership, operational management, fundraising, and community engagement of the organization. Working closely with the Ensemble Directors, the ED ensures the organization fulfills its mission and achieves its artistic, educational and financial goals.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Strategic Planning

  • Work collaboratively with the Board to develop and implement the organization’s strategic plan.
  • Cultivate a positive, inclusive organizational culture aligned with the chorus’s mission and values.
  • Assist in identifying and attracting potential new board members.
  • Support and partner with the Ensemble Directors to ensure balanced growth of artistic and administrative goals.

 

Fundraising and Development

  • Lead and execute a comprehensive strategy, including individual giving, grants, sponsorships and special events.
  • Identify, cultivate and steward donors, funders and community partners.
  • Maintain the constituent database, which records all singers, alumni, funders and giving history.
  • Prepare grant proposals and reports.

 

Operations and Financial Management

  • Collaborate with program staff to ensure high-quality educational and performance experiences.
  • Manage all aspects of program administration including scheduling, bookings, auditions, attendance, conduct, registration, vendor agreements, and the constituent database.
  • Develop and manage annual budgets; ensure financial sustainability and compliance with nonprofit regulations.
  • Coordinate communication between the Board, ensemble directors, parents, and singers.
  • Prepare and present regular financial and operational reports to the Board.
  • Manage ticket sales.
  • Hire and monitor performance of staff and interns and nurture a positive working environment.
  • Purchase all office and program supplies, including sheet music.
  • Recruit and coordinate volunteer activities of parents and parent committees.
  • Maintain proper storage of the music library, supplies, equipment and organization documents.

 

Marketing and Community Relations

  • In partnership with the Board of Directors, develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to raise the profile of the chorus and market its programs throughout our market area.
  • Promote the chorus’s programs and impact through effective communication strategies.
  • Act as the public representative and advocate of the chorus within the community.
  • Build partnerships with schools, arts organizations, businesses and civic groups.
  • Design and produce promotional materials including flyers, concert programs, newsletters, and digital content.
  • Coordinate recruitment events within the program in coordination with the ensemble directors.
  • Maintain relationships with BYC alumni and their families.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in arts administration, nonprofit management, or related field preferred.
  • 3–5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, arts administration, or related sector, preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, financial, and strategic planning skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities; comfortable engaging with youth, families, donors, and community members.
  • Passion for youth development, music education, and the transformative power of the arts.
  • Ability to work from home.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds (e.g., boxes of programs, signage, small musical equipment).
  • Ability to travel locally to meetings, events, and performances, and occasionally work evenings and weekends as required by chorus activities.
  • Strong record of successful fundraising and donor cultivation preferred.

Additional Conditions of Employment

  • Ability to pass both state and federal background checks (including FBI fingerprinting) in accordance with the state Child Protective Service Law.
