About the Virginia Chorale

The Virginia Chorale is Hampton Roads' premier professional choral ensemble. Our mission is to inspire, enrich, and educate through transformative choral performances that combine masterful vocal artistry and powerful programming.

Position Summary

The Virginia Chorale seeks a visionary, collaborative Artistic Director to lead the organization's artistic programming and musical direction. Working closely with the Board of Directors, Managing Director, singers, and community partners, the Artistic Director will shape the Chorale's artistic future while advancing its mission through exceptional performances and meaningful community engagement.

This search is focused on candidates who reside within, or are willing to relocate to, a 100-mile radius of Hampton Roads, Virginia.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Chorale's artistic vision through innovative programming and outstanding performances.
• Plan and conduct subscription concerts, outreach performances, and rehearsals.
• Audition, select, and lead professional singers.
• Oversee the artistic direction of the Young Singers Project.
• Build relationships with community partners, donors, and arts organizations.
• Serve as a public ambassador for the Virginia Chorale.
• Collaborate with the Board and staff on strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, and organizational initiatives.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have:

• A bachelor's degree in music (advanced degree preferred) or equivalent professional experience in choral conducting.
• At least five years of experience conducting professional or advanced choral ensembles.
• Demonstrated artistic excellence and strong rehearsal leadership.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
• A commitment to community engagement and nonprofit arts leadership.
• The ability to inspire musicians, audiences, and supporters alike.

Compensation

Part-time salaried position. Evening and weekend availability is required. $35,000-$45,000 based on qualifications and experience.

The interview process will begin following an initial review of applications, with in-person interviews anticipated in January/February 2027. From this process, four finalists will be selected and invited to guest conduct a concert series during the 2027-2028 season. Following these guest-conducting engagements, the Virginia Chorale will select its next Artistic Director, who will begin their tenure with the 2028–2029 season.
